Arrival; Uros Floating Islands excursion; Bike ride in the fields of Plateria, easy

You are welcomed to the Lake Titicaca region at the Juliaca Airport and proceed directly to the lake port for a boat excursion to the Uros Floating Islands. An amazing archipelago of more than 40 man-made reed islands, the group of several hundred inhabitants are the descendants of the ancient Uros people, who developed their isolated lake culture to escape the Inca and the Spanish. You learn about their incredible reed vessels and islands, fishing methods, and trading practices. After the visit, you continue to your lakeside boutique lodge, Titilaka.

Upon arrival you are greeted with lunch, and after, a siesta and plenty of liquids are recommended to acclimate to the altitude, followed by afternoon tea. Rested and fortified, a late afternoon bike ride takes you through the fields of Plateria, an easy route following country roads along the lake shore through villages and farms. Later, you enjoy a cocktail in the hotel’s striking lounge and proceed to dinner, where local ingredients fuse Peruvian cuisine with a light Mediterranean touch. After dinner, the convivial atmosphere inspires sharing with your fellow guests and hosts.

Morning excursion to Taquile Island; Afternoon walking excursion to Socca Beach

A full day of exploring the lake awaits as you awaken to a healthy breakfast on the terrace with a variety of fresh fruit and local cereals. This morning you embark on an excursion to Taquile Island, a 45-minute boat ride across the lake. The Taquile people, of Quechua origin as opposed to the majority of the region’s locals who are of Aymara origin, are weavers, whose textiles have been declared UNESCO heritage masterpieces, and continue their traditional way of life on the approximately 3-mile long and half-mile-wide island. You are welcomed into the home of a Taquile weaving family and walk the island’s paths through its crop fields and pre-Inca ruins. Returning by boat to the lodge, you soak in magnificent views of Bolivia’s snow-capped Cordillera Real mountains.

After lunch, an afternoon siesta, and tea, you depart from the hotel on foot to Socca, a rural community east of the lodge, following along the broad sandy shores between wetlands and farms, an easy pace lets you further soak in the local scenery and culture as dusk approaches. Later, you partake in a cocktail and delightful dinner at the lodge.

Morning activity of your choice offered from lodge: kayaking, bicycling, bird-watching; Afternoon activity: sailing, Titilaka Arch walk.

After two days exploring Lake Titicaca, today choose how you would like to spend this full day—perhaps indulging in breakfast in bed or a magnificent sunrise at dawn. You may choose to kayak in the clear waters and rocky shoreline near the hotel (with safety instructions provided), or take out one of the bikes again, or perhaps join a local birdwatcher guide in a row boat, learning about the unique totora reeds and spotting, Andean seagulls, flamingos, and grebes near the quiet community of Perka. You return to the lodge for lunch and a rest. This afternoon, after teatime, you could enjoy a sailing trip on the world’s highest navigable lake (weather permitting) with a sunset cocktail. Or, for a panorama on the entire lake and surrounding region, hike nearby to an ancient Incan arch, which again takes you through small villages and farms, letting you see the rural lifestyle of the Peruvian altiplano, and here enjoy a sunset toast. Returning to the lodge, you celebrate your final evening in this exceptional setting.

Departure; optional Sillustani excursion en route (depending on departure flight time)

After breakfast, a transfer is provided to the Juliaca airport or train station. Depending on your travel plans, you may have time for a guided excursion to Sillustani, a spectacular peninsula facing the Umayo lagoon and home to the area’s best-preserved archaeological remains. This unique geologic site was a burial ground for the Pucara, Tiahuanaco, and Ccolla pre-Inca cultures, long predating the Inca expansion. Their tower-like Chullpas tombs were later copied by the Inca, and the differences in period and culture can be seen in these stone structures.
