Villages of Umbria

overview

This riding adventure in central Italy’s little-known oasis of beauty and tradition follows the lower-lying bike paths and quiet paved roads connecting some of Europe’s most scenic medieval towns and villages. Here, along the Olive Way, you’ll pedal to walled towns like Spello, which holds two millennia of historical treasures, and discover Spoleto, an acclaimed center for the arts. Contemplate the rural panoramas outside Bevagna, then venture inside its gates to explore 13th-century palazzi, a medieval theater, and an ancient Roman temple and baths. The tiny, circular fort town of Torre del Colle offers photogenic streets, while the wine center of Torgiano features the famous Lungarotti cellars, where you can enjoy a tasting before cycling on to Brufa to try the local olive oils. Stop whenever something beckons—whether it’s to enjoy delicacies like grilled rabbit or tagliatelle ai funghi (pasta with mushrooms) at a local trattoria, or to cool your feet in a piazza fountain, the choice is yours on this self-guided tour of this wonderful region.

Day 1

Spello

Arrival in Spello

You are met at the Foligno train station in the late afternoon and transferred to your hotel before dinner.

Hotel La Bastiglia

Spello, Italy

Located in a former 16th-century grain mill in the walled medieval town of Spello, this elegant hotel boasts a wide terrace with panoramic views overlooking the Chiona Valley and outdoor swimming pool.

Day 2

Spoleto

Spello to Spoleto; 36km/22mi

Today is level cycling most of the way along the Teverone Valley with some of the best views of the week. The short uphill detour to Trevi is strongly recommended, where you find a beautiful hilltop village dating back to Roman times—and the capital of the Umbrian olive oil industry. Finally through ancient San Giacomo and on to a most hospitable hotel just outside of the city of Spoleto.

Albergo La Macchia

Spoleto, Italy

Set on the outskirts of the historic center of Spoleto, this simple, family-run property is surrounded by Holm oak and olive groves. Its simple rooms are named after different flowers with color schemes to match their floral namesake. It has a bar, reading room, and a swimming pool, and an excellent restaurant frequented by both locals and tourists alike, decorated with railway memorabilia and antiques.

Day 3

Spoleto

Layover Day at Spoleto

The hotel here is just under two miles from the fascinating historic city of Spoleto. Apart from being a great art center, Spoleto can claim buildings seemingly reflecting every major architectural style in history, including a Roman arch, a 10th-century church, 12th-century duomo, and an over 200-foot high 14th-century aqueduct. The castle here was a former prison and now houses an impressive art museum. You can find ample quaint cobbled squares crammed with traditional trattorias where you can linger over lunch.

Day 4

Bevagna

Spoleto to Bevagna; 32km/20mi or 34km/21mi

The wines of Montefalco are known throughout the world, in particular the fine red Sagrantino. There is a climb up to the old village itself, “the Balcony of Umbria,” but you are well rewarded with wine tasting, magnificent views, and beautiful medieval streets. Afterward, it is all downhill from here, past lush green fields, poppies, and buttercups, with splendid views over Bevagna, Monte Cucco, and the Marche Apennines beyond. You can step onto a fabulous panoramic terrace for predinner drinks with views across the entire valley.

Il Poggio dei Pettirossi

Bevagna, Italy

Nestled on the hillside overlooking the ancient town of Bevagna (settled before Roman times), this former farmhouse is endowed with panoramic views from all angles of the property. The guestrooms are like a row of little cottages with individual entrances. Beside the good-sized swimming pool a cold buffet is offered for lunch during the high season, and dinner is served every evening in the airy dining room with stunning views of the Spoleto Valley.

Day 5

Bevagna

Layover Day at Bevagna

This morning you may want to wander into the medieval walled town of Bevagna, a gem in Umbria. Options include a visit of the 13th-century Gothic Palazzo dei Consoli, the golden medieval theater, or the 2nd-century Roman temple and baths that include a spectacular lobster mosaic. After, you can enjoy a relaxing afternoon by the pool with sleepy views over the “‘green heart of Italy,” the dreamy Umbrian countryside.

Day 6

Ripa

Bevagna to Ripa; 33km/21mi or 49km/31mi

Not long after leaving Bevagna this morning, you find yourself freewheeling down into the tiny, circular walled village of Torre del Colle with its photogenic little streets. Then flat cycling takes you across the plain into the old wine town of Torgiano with its famous Lungarotti cellars. There is time for a visit and some tasting before cycling on the “Wine and Art Road” to Brufa, perhaps stopping to try some of the local olive oil.

Ripa Relais Colle del Sole

Ripa, Italy

Set on the slopes of Ripa’s ancient castle and lying just across the valley from Assisi, the Ripa Relais is a true retreat. Its stylish rooms are spread over three farmhouse buildings, each restored yet preserving their ancient essence and appearance with great attention to detail, from the wooden beams and beds made with wrought iron furniture, to the quilts and curtains embroidered with cloth from the perched town of Montefalco. The large swimming pool is set on what is probably one of the most panoramic terraces in Italy.

Day 7

Ripa

Layover day at Ripa

Today is a rest day and you may enjoy the peace and stunning views of your beautifully restored hotel set on the slopes of Ripa’s ancient castle, across the valley from Assisi.

Enjoy spectacular views of St. Francis’ Basilica as you approach Assisi, a perfect lunch spot for today, before cycling on along the lovely traffic-free Via degli Ulivi, which as its name “the Olive Way” implies, takes you through olive groves to the beautifully preserved Roman and medieval town of Spello.
