You are met upon arrival into Lusaka and transferred to your short flight by light aircraft to Mfuwe. Upon arrival at the small Mfuwe airport, you will be taken to your home for the next two nights. Prolific game give this region its renown: buffalo, antelope, giraffe, crocodile, and other impressive creatures will join you at the lagoon of Mfuwe Lodge. There are two game drives a day, one setting out at first light, and then another in late afternoon when wildlife is most active. In the evening, relax with sundowner cocktails, then enjoy a new spectacle as spotlights pick out a parade of nocturnal creatures. You’ve arrived in animal-lovers’ paradise.

Today you head off on a morning game drive that takes you to Bilimungwe, your camp for the next two nights. You’ll journey deeper into the exceptional, lush diversity of South Luangwa National Park. This modern-day Eden has verdant floodplains alive with huge herds of game, mopane woodlands, and indigenous hardwood forests that sustain more than 400 species of birds. The concentration of game around the Luangwa River and its oxbow lagoons is among the most intense in Africa; the mighty river attracts thirsty animals like a magnet. Renowned explorer David Livingstone was one of the first to note the extraordinary riches of South Luangwa Valley, saying “It is impossible to describe its luxuriance.”

On walking safaris and game drives around Bilimungwe, you will come to know the broad variety of habitat. As for wildlife watching, the area is so rich with opportunity, it’s hard to choose where to look first.

The magic of Luangwa continues to enchant as, after a hearty breakfast, you set off on foot from Bilimungwe. A three-to-four-hour safari will take you through the bush to Kapamba Bushcamp, where you will spend the next two nights.

Hippopotamus, 14 different species of antelope, Thornicroft’s giraffe (unique to Luangwa Valley), eland, impala, kudu, baboons, vervet monkeys, and dozens of other animal species are prolific in Luangwa—as are 400 different species of bird.

During your stay, enjoy morning and afternoon walks, and day and night game drives. On night drives, look for sightings of the night ape and nocturnal bush baby.

Leaving Kapamba Bushcamp, enjoy a leisurely walk along the river, arriving at Zungulila in time for lunch. During the next two days, your expert guide will lead you on foot through untouched wilderness, where large herds of buffalo roam grassy plains and elephants pause to drink at fresh springs along the Kapamba riverbanks. Activities are focused around walking; day and night game drives will take you even further afield. In the evening, after wading through the river, join your hosts for sundowners, or sit around the campfire recounting the day’s adventures. Enjoy a starlit supper at your table overlooking the river.

Following a final breakfast, you bid farewell to the extraordinary beauty of the South Luangwa Valley and all of the friends you have made along the way.
