Fès

overview

Uncover more of Morocco at the fascinating sites and cities surrounding Fès—the oldest of the country’s imperial cities and the symbolic heart of Morocco, while luxuriating in a five-star palace overlooking the ancient walled city. A full-day tour starts at the archeological remains of Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage site known as Morocco’s “Pompeii.” This Roman city was the administrative center for Northern Africa and also Rome’s bread basket. Next, visit Moulay Idriss, an important pilgrimage site for Moroccans thanks to the town’s founder, Moulay Idriss el Akhbar, a descendant of the Prophet Mohammed. Finally, tour Meknes, an imperial city under the rule of Sultan Moulay Ismail, which was compared to the finest European cities of its time, with 50 palaces, 20 gates, and a 28-mile-long city wall.

Day 2

Fès

Volubilis, Moulay Idriss & Meknes

This morning you meet your guide in the lobby of the Hotel Palais Jamai at 9:00 am and depart by minibus for a 1-hour drive to the archaeological site of Volubilis, (Oualili in Arabic) one of the Roman Empire’s most remote outposts and considered Morocco’s “Pompeii.” You tour the site’s most impressive monuments including the triumphal arch, capitol, baths, and basilica, as well as the stunning mosaics. Next you continue to the nearby town of Moulay Idriss (also known as Zerhoune), a holy site that contains the tomb of the founder of Morocco’s first imperial dynasty. Your final stop today is the former imperial city of Meknes, which has been referred to as the Versailles of Morocco. Not quite as popular as its more famous sisters, Fès and Marrakesh, Meknes has an air of quiet self-sufficiency and authenticity. You enjoy a lunch of traditional Moroccan cuisine followed by an exploration of the city’s main attractions including the mellah (Jewish quarter), Bab el- Mansour (the lavishly decorated main gate to the city), and the exterior of the Great Mosque (Medersa Bou Inania) before reaching the impressive granaries, vaults, and horse stables (Heri es-Souani and Agdal Basin). The city tour concludes late afternoon with an hour transfer by minibus back to Fès and the Hotel Palais Jamai. Dinner is on your own this evening, and you are free to choose from the dining venues within the hotel or venture out into the neighboring medina, or ancient city, of Fès with suggestions from your guide.
